Mules Start 2022 Off On the Right Hoof
After two such crazy years it was especially important to get 2022 started off on the right hoof. The Mules did just that with a big New Year’s Day extravaganza at the Black Star Pirate BBQ. It was the perfect kickoff for the new year – a picture perfect day on the bay, lotsa good friends and hours of good-time swampy-tonk music.
The Mules had played at Black Star once before, the previous October, and their debut went so well that the owner Tony Carracci (in the non-cowboy hat in above photo) hired us on the spot for New Year’s Day. Exactly two weeks later the outdoor stage and covered dining area were completely destroyed in the big October storm. We were afraid that the New Year’s Day show might not happen, but these pirates are a resilient bunch and in short order had rebuilt everything better than before.
The Black Star Pirate BBQ is located at the Point San Pablo Harbor, just 4 miles north of the Richmond toll plaza. But it’s 4 miles of narrow, winding, inhospitable road that goes through such nothingness that you repeatedly think you must have missed a turn. But then there it is, and it’s always got a good crowd of fun enthusiastic folks who somehow manage to find their way there.
So New Year’s Day was a blast. The Mules played great – even successfully introduced a new song that we hadn’t found time to rehearse. A good time was had by all. If that day was any indication, 2022 will be an awesome year for the Mules, our fans and for all of us.
